A People's History of the United States - A People's History of the United States: 1492–Present is a book by Howard Zinn, which seeks to relay a revisionist history of the United States through the eyes of the "common people" as opposed to those in power. The book has become a major success for a dissident work, selling over a million copies and being used in high schools and colleges across the country.
People's history - A people's history is a type of historical work which tries to look at historical events from the perspective of the "common" people: the disenfranchized, oppressed, poor, non-conformist, or otherwise forgotten, as opposed to that of the power structure.
Social work - Social work is a helping profession focused on "social change, problem solving in human relationships and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance well-being" (IASSW & IFSW 2001). It works with individuals, groups and populations that face particular obstacles or disadvantage, such as persons with low incomes, persons with disabilities, elders, and persons diagnosed with mental illness.
Social role valorization - In psychology and social work practice, Social Role Valorization (SRV) is the name given to a concept for transacting human relationships and human service, formulated in 1983 by Wolf Wolfensberger, PhD, as the successor to his earlier formulation of the principle of normalization (Lemay, 1995; Wolfensberger, 1972). His most recent (1995) definition of SRV is: "The application of what science can tell us about the enablement, establishment, enhancement, maintenance, and/or defense of valued social roles for people" (Wolfensberger, 1995a).
